Cat writes to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

As you will all know, Burrow Beck flooded for the second time in six days, following a period of heavy rain.

I recently visited Hala Road to help and see some of the flooding in Lancaster where residents and businesses continue to be devastated by floods.

On both occasions residents had to be evacuated, with a number having now had to be rehoused as a result of the damage caused to their
homes. Many of these same residents were also flooded in November 2017.

This absolutely cannot go on, and urgent action and funding is needed now.

The Environment Agency developed a proposal to reduce flood risk from Burrow Beck. However, the Environment Agency’s funding calculator at the time suggested that the Government would fund only £776,000 of the estimated £3.3m needed, and so the scheme has not progressed.

Neither have any of these residents been offered the funding from Government often provided after flooding for additional property level defences to be installed at their homes.

Today, I am calling on the Secretary of State to:

  1. Fully fund the scheme identified by the Environment Agency;
  2. Support property level measures for residents and small businesses;
  3. Fund urgent temporary measures while more significant works are
    built.

I hope to have some positive answers on my demands, and I’ll be giving more updates to residents as I receive them.
