The government are consulting on radically reshaping local government in our area. They are looking to abolish our two-tier district and county councils, and merge them into ‘unitary’ authorities. There is no option to keep our current arrangements, so it is vital that local people have their say on which model for local government will work best for our area going forward.

They have now invited councils in Cumbria to put forward proposals, and this involves Lancaster, as the favoured option of Lancaster, South Lakeland and Barrow councils is for a new council which covers Morecambe Bay. The likely alterative for Lancaster is to be part of a ‘Greater Blackpool’ council proposed by Lancashire County Council, spanning the length of Lancashire.

In conversations with local residents and businesses, as well as strong evidence from opinion polling, it is clear that local people feel a Bay council would serve Lancaster much better than a distant ‘Greater Blackpool’. However, the government consultation website is confusing, and we fear that they may be trying to skew the results.
