This morning, I was welcomed to St Thomas’ Foodbank, a cornerstone of the community that provides vital support to those experiencing difficulties with access to food across Garstang and Wyre.

As I walked through the doors, I was struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The foodbank is open to all sections of the community, ensuring that families and individuals who are struggling, receive the help they need with dignity and respect.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Helen and the entire team for their incredible hard work and dedication. The volunteers at St Thomas’ Foodbank are truly the heartbeat of this operation, working to ensure that people in our community aren’t going without. It’s clear that their efforts are making a real difference in people’s lives.

If you are looking to get involved, whether you have a few hours to spare each week or can only help occasionally, your contribution would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to the team directly through their website.

If you find yourself in need of the foodbanks assistance, you can self-refer here. At times, anyone might need to access this kind of help especially during a time where the rising cost of living has had such a profound impact on peoples lives. There is never any shame in reaching out to a foodbank and I assure you that you will be welcomed and met with kindness at St Thomas’ as well as other local Foodbanks.

One of the best ways to support St Thomas’ Foodbank is by signing up for their ‘Best To Buy’ weekly email. This email lists the items that are most needed, helping to keep their shelves stocked with high-priority goods. You can sign up for this by emailing stock@garstangfoodbank.org.uk and make a real difference with your generous donations.

In addition to signing up for the ‘Best To Buy’ email, you can also donate non-perishable food items at Booths and Sainsbury’s Garstang as well as Catterall Co-op, One Stop and Dimonds Co-op Funeral Care. These local drop-off points make it easy for everyone to contribute. Financial donations are also incredibly valuable, enabling the foodbank to purchase fresh food for their parcels. If you would like to make a financial donation, please email the foodbank’s treasurer at treasurer@garstangfoodbank.org.uk.

We have some incredible teams across Lancaster & Wyre operating foodbanks, warm spaces and hygiene banks and St Thomas’ Foodbank is yet another shining example of community spirit in action. I do hope that one day soon, food poverty in this country will be eradicated, however, it is touching to see the generosity and hard work of volunteers and supporters which ensure that local foodbanks can continue to provide much-needed assistance to those currently facing food insecurity.

Thank you once again to Helen and the team for welcoming me today and for the vital work that you do.
