Cat Smith Working for Lancaster and Wyre

Last month I wrote to the Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to highlight the nightmare for new-build homeowners who find themselves locked in to extortionate Estate Management Company fees for poor maintenance of communal spaces.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government have now confirmed to me that they will be consulting on ending the injustice of “fleecehold” arrangements, and will strengthen the rights of new-build homeowners.
I am pleased that the Labour Government have committed to implementing the previous government’s Leasehold and Reform Act 2024 legislation, which does offer some additional protections such as “rights of transparency to require estate management companies to provide further information to homeowners on a proactive basis”.
This sounds positive, but does not go far enough and is too vague, which is why I’m pleased that the Labour Government will finally tackle this, restoring the dream of new homeownership.
