In the first half of this year alone, more than 450 pubs across the UK have closed their doors for the final time, with our region sadly seeing the most closures. More than one in ten pubs are at imminent risk of shutting their doors for good, and in recent weeks, we have seen this firsthand with the closure of the Seven Stars in Stalmine.

Pubs are not just businesses; they are vital community hubs, offering a place for social connection, combating isolation, and supporting local economies. This is especially true in rural areas, where pubs are often the heart of the village.

We need to reverse this alarming trend, which is why I have written to the Secretary of State for Business and Trade in a letter which you can read below, urging the Government to step up and provide greater financial and regulatory support to help pubs and publicans weather these challenging times.
