Today I had the privilege of visiting Standfast & Barracks, Lancaster’s world-class printed textile manufacturer, as they celebrated their centenary this year! It was brilliant to tour their facilities and see first-hand why they have been a creative force in fabric printing since 1924.

I was privileged to meet their talented team of designers, engineers, and colourists—alongside CEO Lisa Montague, Rebecca Pye (Head of Design) and Emma Douglas (Creative and Commercial Director of Manufacturing) who led the fascinating tour alongside Ryan Downend (Production Manager).

It was inspiring to see how Standfast & Barracks has maintained its status as a creative powerhouse in fabric printing since 1924. Their meticulous production processes, attention to detail, and commitment to quality ensure their products stand out globally, attracting highly reputable buyers. We are so fortunate to have this unique manufacturing business on our doorstep here in Lancaster, providing highly skilled and creative job opportunities.

In a time when thriving manufacturing industries are becoming increasingly rare, it is vital to champion companies like Standfast & Barracks. Their resilience and innovation are extraordinary—they’ve overcome monumental challenges like the devastation caused by Storm Desmond, which destroyed their buildings, archives, and machinery, and pivoted to online marketing during the COVID pandemic to sustain their customer base. It was fascinating to hear how they’ve continually pushed boundaries, taken risks, and adapted to contemporary processes to secure their future.

If we want to ensure the longevity of such businesses, we must encourage the next generation of designers, engineers, and creatives to pursue careers in this field. Companies like Standfast & Barracks not only preserve our industrial heritage but are a shining example of British ingenuity and determination.

Here’s to another century of success – thank you so much for inviting me!
