Cat Smith Working for Lancaster and Wyre
Lovely to meet with Global Link to discuss how to improve the immigration and asylum system to work better for everyone.
Most people seeking asylum do not want rely on state funding but are prohibited from working for years whilst their claim is delayed, others are not able to apply in areas of work they specialise in, whilst classes to learn English and about British culture have been cut.
Under the Conservatives, following a financial audit we now know that their initial Home Office budget of £320m ended up costing £7.9bn, including the failed Rwanda and hotel scheme. Along with the inflation, mortgage and cost of living crisis, it is reckless unfunded overspending like this which had led to the very bleak state of our economy which the Labour Government have inherited.
Not only do we need an asylum system that can make decisions in months not years, treat people with dignity and offer opportunities to more easily settle in the UK for those granted asylum, these changes can actually help grow our economy.
