As I drive around the constituency I can’t help but be aware, as are you, of the appalling state of our roads. Even roads where potholes have been filled in or roads the resurfaced are once again developing suspension crunching craters that lead to a trip to the mechanic and a bill for £200 – or more depending on the vehicle.

Potholes – collapsed areas in the tarmac resulting from the pressure of traffic and bad weather – are a menace for motorists. They send a shudder up the spine, damage vehicles’ suspension and can make them career in the wrong direction. Cyclists in particular are at risk – some have been thrown into the path of oncoming cars leading to a trip to A+E or the morgue.

In Over Wyre residents have taken matters into their own hands by making signs to warn drivers of impending doom. The costs to Lancashire County Council Highways Department must be spiralling due to the numbers of drivers submitting bills for damage – another example of why austerity doesn’t work – taxpayers end up forking out for repairs to cars rather than investing that money in better roads in the first place.
