Summer recess for Parliament is well underway which has given me even more time to get out and about locally. Last week it was an absolute pleasure to visit the cohort of young people from the Lancaster and Morecambe area that are taking part in the Prices Trust, Fire and Rescue programme.

The partnership between the Princes Trust and the Fire and Rescue Service has helped thousands of young people to change their lives since the partnerships programme creation back in 1992. Driven by the values of social responsibility and inclusiveness, their aim is to achieve a safer community by working with young people that have been exposed to various risks which in-turn, helps those young people avoid potentially harmful lifestyles, to get into work, training, or education.

Such initiatives are crucial for our communities and the young people that I met with told me how beneficial they had found their time with their mentors during the Prices Trust Programme. Not only have they gained valuable experience and training for future employment, but also lifelong friendships and had opportunities that would have otherwise passed them by.

Severe reductions in funding for youth and community-based services across the country has resulted in a scarcity of safe spaces for people to engage in constructive activities, develop their skills, and build strong relationships within their communities. Despite this challenging backdrop the Princes Trust and the Fire and Rescue Service remain determined to advocate for our young people and the wider community. They always have my full support and I have been eager to get involved over the years.

During my visit, where I was lucky to be joined by Councillor Lizzi Collinge, we had a really engaging conversation about the role of MPs and Councillors and how important the voices of young people are in making positive change. I took some really interesting questions and these young people had very informed opinions on local issues and potential solutions.

Thank you so much for having me and good luck to everyone taking part in the programme, you have bright futures ahead of you!
