It was such an honour to be invited by Emre, a local volunteer for the Dialogue Society, to a Ramadan Iftar Dinner where the theme this year was ‘Peace & Unity’.

This Iftar gathering was so much more than an opportunity to join members of the local Muslim community to break their fast. We shared perspectives, found common interests and forged new friendships. The Dialogue Society strive to cultivate a stronger more compassionate society through meaningful dialogue by providing safe spaces for people to be open.

This work is truly commendable and I was so pleased to have this opportunity to re-connect with people and meet some new faces. I recognise that many in the Muslim community are feeling fragile, hurt, and helpless to see the continuation of the bombardment in Gaza. I too am struggling to comprehend how this is has, and continues to happen.

As someone with an amplified voice, I recognise my privilege and have shared my opinions when asked and used my votes to consistently call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for the release of all hostages. I have and will continue to raise awareness of the atrocities in Gaza whilst standing against discrimination, religious intolerance and racism in all forms.

Please know that I am always here to answer any questions you may have or discuss concerns that you have about local, national or international issues. I can’t claim to be an expert on every topic but I will always respond to you if you contact me. Equally if you would like me to visit your community group please do reach out at cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk.

Thank you again to Emre and the Dialogue Society for hosting this Iftar event and to anyone observing, Ramadan Mubarak – have a blessed Ramadan.
