Cat Smith Working for Lancaster and Wyre
It was fantastic to meet with Wyre Rivers Trust, local farmers and landowners to discuss the Brock and Calder Landscape Recovery project.
Over a decade in the making, the team covering 4,000 hectares are moving to their long-term delivery phase of natural flood management to slow downstream flow and store thousands more gallons of water in the landscape by 2040.
This includes:
leaky dams to slow water heading downstream whilst increasing its purity
using inaccessible corners of farmland for shrubbery and large tree growth to store more water
reshaping fell drainage to restore heather and prevent marshy areas drying out
de-compacting farmland soil to decrease surface water flooding of arable land, keeping it healthy and usable
Not only does this prevent flooding, boost biodiversity and strengthen our food security, these measures can often cost fraction of the price of traditional methods of flood management.
