Traffic at Broadwater tram stop junction

Last year I was pleased to support local businesses and residents to successfully get Fleetwood Road repainted, as this was causing confusion and deterring customer parking at the busy Broadwater junction.

I have been now contacted by residents near the Broadwater tram stop in Fleetwood at the King George’s playing fields about the traffic light signalling.

Recently the light sequencing has changed, giving priority to smaller roads even when there are no vehicles waiting. The results of this are obvious – traffic idling and backed up on Fleetwood Road on both sides for longer periods, including HGVs, buses and vans. Not only is this an issue of emissions, but also pedestrian and child crossing safety as this area is a common school and college drop off point.

I wrote to Lancashire County Council to ask them to fix the lights and put them back to the original sequencing. They have now updated me to advise:

“After assessing the traffic light system, we found that there is a detector loop fault that has affected the signal phasing. We are currently arranging traffic management so we can safely repair the induction loop and we aim to complete the work on 20 June 2023.”

I’m pleased to have got this sorted for residents, and I hope that the traffic management works can be carried out soon and residents no longer see the build up of traffic up and down the roads.

Separately to this, I’m still in talks with Blackpool Transport and Lancashire County Council to get the tram stop shelters here repaired, as they have been without roofs and window panels for many many months now, and it’s time to restore some pride in these. Keep up to date on my work on this at catsmith.co.uk/fleetwood.
