A year on from when I began enquiries about the poor signal in Lancaster, we’re sadly no further with the o2/Vodafone masts (owned by Telefónica) in the Marsh area of the city.

The masts are connected to the chimney of the old power station, formerly the location of the company A1 Supa Skips. The masts were vandalised earlier last year, leaving thousands of residents and small businesses without decent connectivity. Sadly, the fire at the site last December meant that these masts were impossible to access to fix.

I have asked Telefónica to fix them, or find alternative sites, even as as a temporary measure, and also compensate customers.

Last December, the company advised they understood the importance of a timely resolution, and that they had agents actively engaged in negotiations to address this.

Five months on, and a year on from when I raised this, I am disappointed and frustrated that there appears to have been no improvements to the mobile signal in the area, which continues to impact thousands of constituents.

I’ve written to Telefónica again to ask for urgent action, an to the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology,
asking for her intervention to finally give Telefónica the impetus to act in the interests of the community and its customers.
